42" LG LCD TV (42LC2DR)

(Includes a high-definition tuner and 250GB hard-drive recorder.)

You've probably seen this TV advertised on, err, TV - it features a tuna and a hard-drive recorder being thrown into a TV full of water. Pay some attention because you're going to want one.

I bought this LCD TV recently and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a large format LCD or plasma television. You should be able to find it for a cheapest price of around AU$3,000 (in early 2007) - if you can't, negotiate!

There is a model below the LG 42LC2DR which is almost identical except that it lacks the hard-drive recorder, but it is worth spending a few hundred more - the integrated hard-drive recorder is excellent and more useful than I could've imagined.

Whereas previously I barely watched television and recorded something even less often, with this LG 42" LCD TV I am prone to scheduling recordings of shows in which I might be even only slightly interested - it's a great surprise to hit the Studio button, browse to Recorded TV and find something more interesting that whatever was on live TV.

Recording live TV

Unlike many hard-drive recorder setups, this LG TV is recording automatically whenever you're watching "live" TV - this is incredibly useful - you can pause to get a drink or take a phone call of course, but even better is that you can hit «« to jump back 8 seconds and catch dialogue that you didn't quite hear or show someone something that they missed while out of the room.

Skipping ads or catching something you missed

Flicking through ads is easily done when you're watching a recorded program or if you're watching live TV on delay - the »» button jumps forward about 20 seconds - whack that a few times and you emerge out the other side of an ad break.

You can easily record things other than TV channels - your VCR, playing Xbox, etc.

Upsides

Looks great, easy to setup, straightforward to use.

Downsides

Well, it's a bit indulgently priced for a TV, but most of these big screens are. Other than that, it can get quite warm and you'll end up watching a lot more TV, but that's honestly about it - it's a fantastic box to have.
